Being somewhat of a cornerstone of the brand and everything, the animation world was not left behind in Disney’s sprawling announcements yesterday.

A slew of new projects, both short and long, are expected to roll out of the Mouse House over the next two years.

Some of them also have the potential to achieve that “future classic” note.

Light year

Now, maybe close an eye and try to figure it all out; Chris Evans will lead this origin story of the human man that inspired the creation of the Buzz Lightyear toy. But as Toy story, it is also an animation. Clear? Well, even Evans felt the urge to try to clarify things on Twitter.

Raya and the last dragon

A fantastic tale of humans and dragons in the world of Kumandra, with Star Wars’ Kelly Marie Tran voicing the warrior Raya and Awkwafina as the dragon Sisu. It was confirmed to get the ‘premiere access’ treatment Mulan had: launching in theaters and on Disney + for a fee, same day.

Win or lose

Pixar’s first complete series, Win or lose will come with the usual cerebral and tactile side of the studio, following a college softball team heading into a championship game, told from different character perspectives.

Encanto

Hamilton icon Lin-Manuel Miranda will be up front Encanto, the story of a “magical family in a magical house” set in Colombia. Miranda will also be on scoring duties.

Cars

Yes, Lightening McQueen and Mater will be back for a new series on Disney +, arriving in the fall of 2022.

Baymax

The star of the shine of the Oscar winner Great hero 6, the gigantic Baymax healthcare robot, has its own show in San Fransokyo.

Days dug

Remember Dug, the excitable retriever of Up? (SQUIRREL !!) Well he’s back with a new backyard-based series premiering in fall 2021.

What could be cuter in nature than the red panda? No there is not. From the director of the short film Pixar Bao, Domee Shi, will come this bundle of hugs, the story of a clumsy teenage girl who turns into a panda when she’s horny. We’ve all been there.

Zootopia +

We will come back to the inhabitants of Zootopia (Where Zootropolis as it was called in the UK), with the crowd-connected shrew Fru Fru and Flash the Sloth set to return.

Tiana

The hero of The princess and the Frog, Tiana, gets its own show in 2023, all taking place in the kingdom of Maldonia. She will be the first Disney princess with her own series.

Moana

This will be followed by Moana, which will pick up the story of the brave explorer from the inspiring 2016 film.

Iwaju

One of the most intriguing animation projects, Iwaju is a collaboration between Walt Disney Animation Studios and pan-African comic book entertainment company Kugali. Set it Lagos, it will explore class themes in a futuristic world.

Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers

Edgy comedy fans will be both bewildered and intrigued by the prospect of a live action-animation hybrid reboot of the Chipmunk brothers Chip ‘n Dale, starring John Mulaney and Andy Samberg, directed by Lonely island friend Akiva Schaffer, and also starring Seth Rogen.
